Young student wins competition with song based on my book!

A few weeks back, I ran a songwriting workshop at Didcot Girls’ School which was a huge success. The school decided to hold a competition for the finished songs, and to my utter delight, the winner (not decided by me but by the school’s Patron of Writing, Elaine Baker) was Erin Brady, with a really stunning song based on my book Looking at the Stars. With the family’s kind permission, I’m able to share this video of Erin performing her winning entry, along with the lyrics below. What a talented young lady! I’m really blown away. Huge congratulations to Erin.

Where is it/Looking At The Stars

Once upon a time I read a book,
The saddest story to see,
but little did I know,
what was once a story would happen to me.
It’s like taking a whip from a cane,
because the place where you feel safe fills me with pain

You’d go to a place where you feel safe,
with affection love and care,
but for me that place with love and affection is bare,

Please take me home,
but where is it really?
Please take me home,
I’m on the edge nearly.
What if your home is no longer a homeland anymore?
What if your homeland is no longer a home?
Ho-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh home,
but where is it really? x4
I’m on the edge nearly

I, I will fight through,
I will be strong,
but every place I go,
it just feels wrong.
I feel like breaking down,
everywhere is a dead end,
but now, now I know,
I have to defend.

You’d go to a place where you feel safe,
with affection love and care,
but for me that place with love and affection is bare,

Please take me home,
but where is it really?
Please take me home,
I’m on the edge nearly.
What if your home is no longer a homeland anymore?
What if your homeland is no longer a home?
Ho-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh home,
but where is it really? x4
I’m on the edge nearly

This wasn’t how it was supposed to end,
and now there’s a part of me that needs to mend.
I’m breaking down inside just watch me fall.
I’m screaming but it’s a whisper, can you hear my call? x2

What if your home is no longer a homeland anymore?
What if your homeland is no longer a home?
Please take me home,
but where is it really?
Please take me home,
I’m on the edge nearly.
Ho-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh home,
but where is it really? x4
I’m on the edge nearly
